Oligarchy & Persimmons is a sentiment of stillness. The book is comprised of chronologically ordered images captured on a Canon IXUS 65 & cropped to form new compositions, a total of 324 pages. They document my first visit to Canada's East Coast; where I resided in Québec City for one month, visited Montréal twice & stayed with my Mom in her New Glasgow home.
It represents a cycle of relocation & adjustment in a past, present & future home concurrently. Colour, form & texture are focal elements in lieu of the initial subjects, which linger on the details that comprise place.
Home cannot be limited to a tangible space alone, as it embellishes all corners of life. In its purest form; home is hopeful, safe, grounding, vulnerable——it can be found or gifted whenever it is felt.
The softcover design is intangible space. I created the Persimmon typeface for the title & page numbers in this publication, based on existing Fette deutsche Schrift by Rudolf Koch, 1910. 12 copies were produced as pocket books [4.25" x 6.87"], 2023.
This reworked edition of Oligarchy & Persimmons is hand bound using a punch, needle & thread. These pages have been sacrificed from an existing copy of the original reproduction. It is held between 2 sheets of brushed aluminum, complete with a woven mohair spine.
The braided bookmark extends to 5'7" & is adorned with a pearl trinity; mirroring my height & silver nose piercing.
This structure is symbolic of my body & absorbed experience, expanding on the original concepts which inspired the book. An unpierced shell belonging to the series If you care, know they'll listen is depicted on page 311. My intention when crafting this hardcopy, was to bridge these two projects using a kin language of material; incorporating the same mohair strands, pearls & metal which are adorned by the shells. 2024.
